Prescribed enhancements…

Hello and Happy Tuesday everyone!  I have been feeling SUPER amazing the past few days. Aside from a great weekend spent with my momma, sister and nephew, plus yesterday off (thanks, Feds!), I have felt so so great. I mean waking up with energy, feeling spunky at work, and great workouts, too!  What, pray tell, could be the catalyst to this recent amazing status?

Steroids.  Plain and simple.

Don’t freak out!  They are prescribed.

The quick and dirty behind the steroid usage.  Sometime last week I injured my left index finger (weird, I’m right handed?!) and it was extremely painful.  I am not a wimp for pain; in fact, for the record, I have had three cavities in the past filled without Novocain.

Yeah, I’m hardcore.

Needless to say when I am in pain, its serious.  After a few days of excruciating pain and the inability to bend or extend my finger all the way I caved and went to my orthopedist.  After a couple x-rays, the diagnosis was flexor tendinitis.  Basically the tendon in my finger was super pissed off and inflamed.  My physician then prescribed a prednisone steroid pack, similar to an antibiotic z-pack, and said if I was healed at the end to come back.  After 2 days on this stuff not only was my finger SO much better, I felt AMAZING.  No wonder people get addicted to this stuff!  Now I recognize the steroids meatheads use are probably no where near the dosage I took, but I’ll take that amazing feeling, even though it was short-lived.

Before you go yelling that steroid usage is bad, I’m a bad person for even writing this, simmer down.  I would never advocate for using any artificial means to enhance the body, least of all steroids.  On the contrary, I feel it is best to remain natural and clean to allow your body to function like the amazing machine it is.  I am a bit ashamed for not sucking it up and mustering through the pain.  But I also think that when your body is telling you something (pain, rest, etc), that you should never ignore it.  I’ve mentioned before how important it is to listen to your body.  In this case, I did have tendinitis, and I treated it with the help of my physician.  Be kind to your body!

Moving on from my soapbox, I have a new recipe for you!!  I’ve seen this on several blogs, and it’s not a miraculously new concept, but I love it J

I give you…drum roll please…Smoothie in a bowl!  Astounding I know.

Makes: 1 amazing serving for your tummy!

Ingredients:

1 serving of simple-flavored (vanilla, plain) protein powder/smoothie mix

Handful of ice

Scant 1/8th tsp of xanthum gum (makes it super thick!)

Anything else you want to add!  Cocoa powder, PB2 (been craving a lot of peanut butter flavored things recently, so I’ve been adding this), frozen berries, nut butters, you name it!  Go crazy!

Directions:

Add all ingredients to a mixer, blend blend blend, add to bowl.  Enjoy with a spoon!  I added some brown rice cereal on top for some added crunch (I love anything crunchy!).  It was soooo good!  This is a great post-workout snack or meal.

Yummy!!

My workouts have been crazy the past few days (thanks again, Rx steroids!).  Sunday I ran 4 miles and did 30 minutes of strength training, and Monday I ran 3.5 miles and did some yoga stretching.  Today was just a couple workout videos to give my body a break from the crazy cardio sessions.

Well I’m off to enjoy some New Girl on tv tonight- a perk to getting your workout done early!  Here’s some inspiration from Pinterest to get you through the week (should you be lacking the ‘roids :p)

Inspiration!

Monday Funday!!….oops

Monday Funday!…So this was supposed to be posted yesterday…but I was interrupted, so lets pretend it was anyway :)

How was everyone’s weekend?  Mine was pretty…lame!  But lame in a good way.  I spent most of the weekend relaxing and having ‘me’ time.  Friday night I was a wild woman.  I worked out and did my taxes!!  Woo call the police to tame the beast!!  Saturday I did some chores, went to a work hockey game (we lost :( ) and spent the night working out and watched tv.  Sunday I slept in, had breakfast, went back to sleep…then did laundry.  I know, what a CRAZY weekend!  I bet you can hardly contain yourself reading this excitement!

Honestly after the last week’s anxiety over the new job I needed a weekend to myself.  I also seemed to have over-stressed my body working out too much (sore knees, over all feeling of being burnt out) so the workout today was much less intense.

30 minutes on the treadmill- mostly walking at a 4 on an incline, though I threw in a couple minutes of running at a 6

20 minutes of a Gilad workout

I think this week I will be a little less intense.  I think its extremely important to listen to your body.  If you are feeling exhausted from your workouts, not really into them, dreading the workouts, etc, maybe its time to take a break.  If you still feel the ‘need’ to move your body, do something simple/active rest.  Go for a walk outside, reconnect with nature.  Try a new workout video or cable tv workout (check to see if you have any free workouts ‘on demand’).  Or just do a modified workout- walk on the treadmill instead of run.  Try new weight machines.  Try a new class.  Try anything new to get out of your rut!  But most importantly- do listen to your body if it needs rest.  You will not melt or wither away by resting for a day or two, I promise!  Your body will thank you for it, and I bet you’ll be more energized when you do return to the gym or class!

Oh, I also made some whoopie pies for my coworkers birthday!!

Whooooopppieee!

Rock on Lovers!  Happy (day before…oops) Valentines Day!

Question: Do you listen to your body and take breaks when necessary?  Have you ever pushed yourself when you know you should rest?

Anxiety/New Job, plus The Royal Burpee Challenge!

Hello everyone and Happy Weekend!  I don’t know about you but this week has been crazy long and exhausting!  First things first- I got a new job! Woo!  I will still be working for the same Agency, just as a different position and out of Human Resources.  I’m very excited as I have been trying to get for a couple of years now, but the job economy has been less than stellar.  I am eternally grateful for my time spent where I have been- I have met so many amazing people and made some really great friends.  I am truly sad to be leaving and hope with every fiber of my being that I will remain great friends with a select few.  I wont be moving far- just a couple floors down- so there’s no excuse to not get coffee/lunch/froyo a couple times a week!  While I am excited for a new position with new projects and responsibilities, I am so so so anxious and nervous, too!

I feel ya buddy

I have an unfortunate habit that with every new life challenge I make myself so anxious it literally effects my life.  In middle school I had horrendous stomach pains, in college I would have headaches, and as an adult (as evident all this week when I found out I got the job) I have not been sleeping well at all, even with the help of sleep aids, relaxation techniques, etc.  Hopefully this will end soon when I can convince myself I will be just fine and will conquer this new job with the same vigor as I have my current job!

Today’s workout was a mix of whatever I felt like doing- I barely got 5 hours sleep last night thanks to my anxiety, so I was pretty  exhausted when I got home from work.  I attempted to nap without success, but felt pretty rested anyway.  Here’s what I accomplished on limited sleep:

10 minutes HIIT treadmill warm-up

10 minutes arm and leg weight machines (15 reps/3 sets of 5 machines)

15 minutes Bodyrock tabatas

15 minutes arm workout with free weights plus some ab work

I was a sweaty beast when I finished!  I felt super accomplished I tackled my taxes…and quickly saved and exited out of the program when I didn’t see a big return.  I may ask the tax people tomorrow what the deal is as I had a pretty nice return last year and expected at least nearing that this year.  Stupid tax season!

One last thing-I am FB fitness group friends with the very lovely DC Event Junkie – and I have joined her as well as Hey Love Designs in the Royal Burpee Challenge!  From the website I will be joining in the craziness:

Burpee Madness

“Those who join us in the challenge will start with a single burpee on Feb. 11. On Feb. 12, the second day, we will do two burpees. On Feb. 13, the third day, we will do three burpees. We will continue adding a burpee to our daily workout until June 4, when we will do 115 burpees in honor of what would be Royal H. Burpee’s 115th birthday. Over the course of the challenge, athletes will do a total of 6,670 burpees.”

Over 6500 burpess total?  Yup, I must be crazy!!

Anyway I hope you lovely kids have a fantastic – anxiety free!- weekend!

Sunday Inspiration and Treadmill HIIT

Hello and happy Sunday everyone!!  Hope you had a fantastic weekend!  Mine wasn’t too shabby. I had a pre-Valentines weekend celebration with my momma.  I bought her tickets to her favorite movie/play/musical at a dinner theater- Fiddler on the Roof!  I’m not usually a fan of plays, but this was fantastic!  And my mom enjoyed it SO much!  I also got her a pair of earrings (you’ll hear a lot about me buying jewelry for my mom; since my dad has passed I have to make up for it!) that she lost and she was SO surprised!  She couldn’t stop smiling all night!  I love when I can make my momma happy :)

I spent Super Bowl Sunday doing not-so-Super-Bowl things.  I hit the grocery store and Wal-Mart, and then did the usual Sunday chores and gym session.  Don’t get me wrong, I love me some football.  But none of my teams are in and it’s a school night, so I’d rather just relax and maybe flip to it every now and then while watching a Sex and the City marathon!

Speaking of Sunday workouts- I’ve been really well with Body Rock, but since I haven’t been doing well diet-wise (damn you snacks!) I decided today it all changes!  I bought all good food and super healthy snacks for work this week, and I plan to write out my workouts and check them off as I complete them.  Although I may workout a lot, I realize that’s only a small percentage if I want to see real change.  I have to stick to healthy eating, portion control, and NO over-snacking!  I do confess I’ve been a bit preoccupied with my body and weight. Whereas many of my friends have the uber-metabolism I would kill for, I was blessed with the fat gene.  Plus, my ‘fun-size’ stature makes any weight gain noticeable on my tiny frame, forcing me to work extra hard for the physique I want.  But I am determined!!  So my plan this week is to have the mindset that I can do this, I can change my body, I can get fit and healthy and be confident!!

You CAN Do This!!

Back to the workout for today.  One good thing about working out on Super Bowl Sunday- a gym all to myself!!  Today I did a HIIT (high intensity interval training) treadmill routine from One Fit Foodie.  It was killer!  I topped it off with a 5 minute ‘cool down’ on the elliptical and a Body Rock workout.  Needless to say I was super sweaty!

I hope that if you find yourself worried about not hitting the gym as hard or as often as you wanted, slipped at family gatherings and had one to many pigs in a blanket, and are lacking confidence in the awesomeness that is you that you realize, too, that you CAN do anything you put your mind to!  You are strong, sexy and confident, and with a little determination can reach your goals!!  Make yourself proud!!
