Rambling Thoughts of a 5k-er

Last weekend I participated in a 5k to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer.  A- from the blog Whispering Crowns, recruited me and Michelle to
help her raise money for this organization.  Of course!  I love to help in any way I can!  Even though I am just getting back into running after a not-so-thrilling bout with Insanity, I still rocked the 5k (with three hours sleep AND a pulled quad, no less!) in just under 31 minutes!!

This was my first run since I did race for the cure back in June 2007. That race day was gross- it was one of the hottest days on record, SUPER muggy, and I just hated the super large crowds. Last weekend was the complete opposite- It was a beautiful day and I really really enjoyed my run!  I felt energized (thanks to a 6-hour energy and great breakfast) and ready to tackle it head on!

Pre-race (and non-sweaty)

Since I normally run on a treadmill watching some mindless tv show, this run I had only angry music and my random thoughts to keep me company.  I thought you may find it amusing the inner-workings and rambling thoughts of someone running a 5k for the first time (in 5 years):

Start:
-Alright!  Here we go!!  Lets keep a steady but fast pace and see if we can really kick butt!

-Ok people, get out of the way, its too early to be acting silly.

-Wow, what an outfit.  Cute you’re in the spirit, but no tye dye, thanks.

-Need new song already. Linkin Park FTW!

-Man its such a gorgeous morning.  Wonder if they have any good snack foods at the end…

-Ha ha, they blocked the traffic lights.  You guys will be stuck forEVER!  Muah ha ha.

-I just even laughed to myself.  Keep running, idiot.

Reaching the 1st mile:
-Hmm, haven’t seen any signs for mileage markers yet.  Maybe they don’t have them.  Its has to have been a mile already.

-Ok, this part is uphill so lets go ahead and walk a bit, have to save our energy for the last 2+ miles.

-Crap, there’s the mile 1 marker.  I could’ve made that.  Damnit.  You slacker….no no, It’s ok, it’s ok, you needed that break. Still recovering from your quad pull…you’re doing great!  Now find a good song, take a deep breath, and…..GO!

Nearing Mile 2:
-Man, there are a lot of flipping hills on this course.  Who the heck chose this route? No worries, I will walk the up and run on the down.  And run faster than normal on the straightaways.

-Ok, that little kid is going faster than me. You can beat him.  Well, running anyway, geez don’t want to actually beat him up.

-Now I’m really sweating.  Should’ve worn an headband.

-Oh wait, I have a wrist-sweat band.  Duh.  Use that.

-Stupid little kid, stay behind me.

-Ha ha, still stuck at the traffic light– suckers!  Watch me lazily walk past you while you’re stuck.

-Hmm, wonder what shirt I should wear for the concert later.  Something white in case it’s hot and I get sweaty.  Which you still are, right through this shirt.  Should’ve chosen the black sports bra instead of the pink one…in a white shirt.

-Random energy surge- go go go!!  Yeah, you GOT THIS!  I CAN RUN THE WHOLE THING!  Watch out!!  Wooooo!!!

Halfway through mile 3:
-Seriously, these hills suck.  And nats, where did you come from?  I don’t see any ponds anywhere.  Bleh, I think I swallowed one.  Good protein though.  Wait, why are you thinking about getting your protein from a bug??  Gross.

-Must choose new song. Need something to keep me pepped.  Starting to flounder.  Ha ha, I don’t like flounder…I do like sushi.  Mmm sushi.

-Woo Papa Roach- Last resort…whaaat. Love this song. We can totally go faster now.

-Yeah we are rockin’.  Boom.  Take that women-whos-been-pacing-me.  And your stupid glitzy headband.  It’s kind of cute…Im Jealous.  Nah, I
don’t need a fancy headband.  Stupid headband, its ugly.

-Oh yeah that breeze is nice, keep ‘em coming.

Nearing the end:
-Man, this wasn’t too bad.  I could do this again!

-Well, only if the conditions were right.  It was good weather today.

-Ok, maybe we should wait until we are fully healed before considering another run.

-Oh wait, the color run in September!  Yeah I can do that.

-Stupid kid, why are you passing me again??

Coming to finish line:
-YES!  I can do this!  Pass that woman, go go go!

-Ok wait, need a good finish song.  Where are my Britney songs…

-Alright, Britney song on and now go go go!!

Crossing finish line:
-Boom!  Take that three hours sleep!!  Boom!

This is not me…

Source

-Whew, ok, time for water.  Wheres the water…

-Water found.  Oooo and bananas!!  I could use one of those…

-Hey, you have a cookie!  I want a cookie!  Screw paleo, I earned a damn cookie!  I just ran a 5k on 3 hours sleep bitches!!

-That wasn’t too bad.  I did way better than I thought I would!  Yay go me!!

–Ok, now I wonder if I can get a nap in before the concert….doubtful.
——————————

And that was pretty much my entire stream of thought during the race!  I know, I’m a bit crazy :)

That’s me- the short one in the shadows! Go team!

So there you have it!  What do you think about when you’re running?  Or exercising in general?  Run a 5k or charity race recently?  Ever heard of the color run??

Rock on lovers :) I am headed to NC this weekend on a roadtrip with a couple of my girlfriends!  Woo!

Survey Thursday!

Hello and happy Thursday Lovers!  How is everyone’s week going?  My weekend was good and not so good.  That job test I studied for?  Bombed it.  Not that I’m making excuses (other than me not having the brain power to do it), but that test was ridiculously hard.  Harder than I remember the GREs being!  In any event, I failed it…man, that is so hard to admit.  I hate failing anything and then having to admit it makes it seem more real.  But honestly, I have a job I like/love (learning to love, as soon as I am able to learn more about what I do!) and I have a great family and supportive friends- what more could I ask for out of life?  Perhaps fate is telling me I just got this new position so I must accept and be grateful before asking for another opportunity so soon.  Plus, I found out there was a slim-to-none chance of me actually getting a position if I passed in the office I wanted.  So I can wait and study hard for the next posting when fate says I am ready.   Besides, I’ve learned a valuable lesson the last few years that really helps with any bad thing I experience- dwelling does nothing for me.  I need to accept what has happened and learn that I cannot change or be upset over something that has already happened, but I can do something about what happens now and what happens in my future.  So I refuse to dwell or mope any longer than I did (a few hours and this paragraph).

The rest of the weekend (post test bombing) was great!  I spent a good couple hours atoning for my failure by cleaning our apartment-you could eat off every surface of that place.  Afterwards I had a lovely date night in Chinatown getting my all-time favorite gelato (pistachio flavor aka mouthgasm!) and seeing the Avengers movie!  It was really good!  Sunday I spent the day doing more chores and prepping food for the week.  After seeing this fun Survey I found originally through Ashley’s blog but have seen it pop up all around the healthy blogosphere!  Now it’s my turn :)

1. What did you eat for breakfast?

I made a batch of coconut flour pancakes into coconut flour bakes- basically just putting the batter in a baking dish and popping into the oven for a breakfast cake!

2. How much water do you drink a day?

I don’t take count, but I try to drink 2-3 20 oz bottles while at work, then another 1-2 (or more if its an intense workout day) once I am home.

3. What is your current  favorite workout?

Treadmill sprints!  I don’t know why it took me this long to ‘find’ them.  I was aware before, but not until I read an article on nerdfitness.com about interval sprint did I start doing them.  And now I love it!

4. How many calories do you eat a day?

I don’t count calories, but I would guesstimate at about 1500-1800 a day (I’m little remember, so I don’t require that much and make sure to fuel pre- and post-workout properly).

5. What are your favorite healthy snacks?

Pretty sure snacking is my middle name (interchangeable with noshing).  I love most nuts- especially almonds, cashews and macadamias.  Apples with almond butter.  Cottage cheese with crunchy anything in it.

6. What do you usually eat for lunch?

It depends what the mood is.  This week is been butter lettuce (my fav!) salad with Boar’s Head no-salt-added turkey, baby carrots and dollops of Whole Foods Guacamole.

7. What is your favorite body part to strength train?

Also depends on my mood.  Some days I love the burn, others I hate it.  I would say my lower body- quads and hamstring.  Love me some squats!

8. What is your least favorite body part to strength train?

My triceps- its been an on-going epic battle for most my life.

9. What are your “bad” food cravings?

I agree with most bloggers that answered this- ‘bad’ food is a bad mental habit.  Yes, some are less healthy than others, but deprivation of foods you love will only cause you to binge on them (or others) if you deprive yourself too long.  I love crème brulee, Reese’s, and home made dark chocolate chip cookies.  I also love my moms chesnut stuffing for thanksgiving- made with unthinkable amounts of real butter.  It. Is. Ah-maze-ing.

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements?

Yes- just a multi gummy vitamin.  Yes, I am an adult and proud to admit my love for gummy vitamins.

11. How often do you eat out?

Rarely- maybe once a week, depending who I am with.  If we’re talking just for treats- couple times.  I get froyo at least once a week, if not more.

12. Do you eat fast food?

Nope.  I don’t like the feeling of a rock in my stomach afterwards.  I always feel greasy and gross.  The last ‘fast food’ I had was sweet potato tots from Sonic.  Super yummy, but instant heartburn.

13. Who is your biggest supporter?

My mom and one of my best friends S.  Both placate all my crazy fitness and diet changes.  And S, the lovely guinea pig, will always try my crazy healthy concoctions. She’s such a good sport :)

14. Do you have a gym membership?

I used to for more than 2 years.  I ended it last September when I lost all interest in going and was sick of the same place.  I now vary my workouts between the gym in my apartment to cable-provided ondemand workouts to various workout DVDs I have.

15. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

Varies- I try to get 7.5-8, but I usually have trouble sleeping so sometimes its only 6.5-7.

16. Do you have a “cheat” day?

Nope, every day is cheat day- I always try to fit in some chocolate or sweet treat like froyo.  Life is too short to deprive all the time!

17. Do you drink alcohol?

Rarely.  Ask any of my friends and I just don’t drink much when I go out.  Maybe a drink before we go out or one there, but that’s it.

18. Do you have a workout buddy?

My ipod.  Sometimes my roommate- but I usually like to workout solo.  Its my decompression me-time.

19. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to a Healthy Lifestyle?

Learning all kinds of new workouts and trying new foods!  Who knew nut butter on cottage cheese would be SOOO good?  I also feel great knowing I’m doing something good for my body that keeps me alive and kicking every day!

20. What was the last healthy thing you did?

Aside from the normal eat breakfast, drink water, worked out last night- I rested my pulled quad muscle and gently eased back into a workout regimen to ensure I did not reinjure it.

Your turn!  Answer a few or all!!

Rock on lovers :)

Love and Loathe, Toss and Try

Hello and happy almost-weekend Lovers!  I have been crazy busy (as always it seems!) and super stressed. I have been attempting but procrastinating studying hard for a test I have to take Saturday for a job I applied to- and will hopefully get!  I am really nervous- even though I started a new position a couple months ago, this one is even closer to what I really want to do with my background in Forensic Psychology.  But enough about stress!  I wanted to mention my awesome weekend prior to last weekend where I was lucky to spend a couple days at my best gf’s moms house in the country near WV!  It was very peaceful and tranquil, her house welcoming and warm, and I had such an enjoyable time.  Even though it was chilly and rained, I still enjoyed communing with nature and getting away from the city for a bit.  They were such gracious and kind hosts I cant wait to visit again!  Hopefully this time it’ll be a bit warmer and rain-less!

Since my last couple of posts were a bit lengthy, I thought I would make this one a simple ‘What I hate/what I love post’.  So here ya go!  Some things I’ve been loving, loathing, trying and tossing.  Maybe I’ll make this a regular post?!

Love:

  • Veggies.  Been craving broccoli and carrots recently.  No idea why but I’m sure my body loves it!
  • Farmers Market- there is one right next to my work every Thursday.  They have great apples and my favorite apple butter, plus a gelato stand!
  • Weather
  • New workout challenges
  • Smores

    Yum

Loathe:

  • Injury- pulled quad.  If you follow me on twitter (@Shortqtpie) You know I pulled my quad muscle really bad playing soccer a couple weeks ago.  I have never pulled a muscle this bad- I literally hobbled off the field in tears.  Thankfully it is almost all better today!
  • Forced exercise regime (see above- no insanity, walking only)
  • Studying- It just gets harder the older I get to discipline myself to study.

Trying:

  • Paleo diet- since when do I not try something new?  I LOVE my oatmeal and miss it so.  But so far so good!  The hardest has been giving up dairy- slowly but surely.
  • Coconut flour- its an approved flour on the paleo diet, and I have been making coconut flour everything- cookies, pancakes, you name it.

Tossing:

  • Fish parenting.  I’m sad to report that Sultan Carlos Finnegan did not survive the weekend I was in WV.  Sad Face :(

What are you loving/loathing, tossing/trying recently?

Wish me luck this weekend!  I will definitely need it!!

Rock on lovers :)

April Foodie Pen Pals and family weekend fun!

I am alive!!!

Hello lovers!  How was your weekend?  Sorry I’ve been a bit MIA recently- I’ve been trying to catch up on life and find time for myself.  And I can safely say that after some good spring cleaning of my apartment I feel more relaxed and free and ready to get back to regular posting!

My weekend was chock full of fun and relaxation.  Friday I cleaned out my apartment of some things I’d been meaning to organize and toss- very cathartic to clean out junk you don’t need!  Don’t you just love that freeing feeling?  That night I drove to Williamsburg with my mom to see my niece perform at her cheer-leading competition on Saturday at Busch Gardens.  I have never been a fan of cheer-leading (I grew up swimming competitively and playing what my mom called ‘contact’ soccer), but it was neat to see all the girls all dolled up and having fun.  And I am proud of her performing and putting her all into learning!

That's her doing the backbend. Proud Auntie here :)

We also got to ride one roller coaster- the Griffin- which was CRAZY SCARY!  I barely opening my eyes!!  Unfortunately the weather turned colder and started to rain, so we all hit the outlets for some shopping.  The best purchase was this Stormtrooper t-shirt. I am a nerd through and through- and I totally rocked this shirt on  date!

Star Wars nerd at heart

After some good purchases were made we drove home where I decided it was time for some punk rock in my life- and put red highlights in my hair!  Its not permanent, so it will wash out in a few weeks, but it’ll be fun while it lasts!  Sunday I spent super-cleaning my apartment, errand shopping, and coconut flour pancake making.  Recipe to come!

One delish pancake mess!

Ok now onto the main event!!  Today Yesterday was the Food Pen Pal Reveal day thanks to Lindsay at the Lean Green Bean.  Wow, I can’t believe it’s the 30th already! May 1st already!! Where has the time gone?  Today marks the beginning of the month of crazy vacations!!  Every weekend is packed- I have a 5k, a concert, an ulcer-inducing test for a possible new job, a girls weekend getaway to NC to visit a college friend, a weekend at VA beach with my mom, then my cruise to the Mediterranean!!  But enough about my heavily scheduled month of crazy- on to the goods!

April’s Food Pen Pal box was sent to me by the lovely Rachel at Three Men and A Little Lady.  I cannot tell you how much I LOVED this box!  Its like she knew me!  Creamy Almond butter (which surprisingly is still intact, though almost completely gone), my FAVORITE oatmeal in a new awesome flavor, a Kind bar (that I devoured while opening the rest of the box), some hot chocolate mix, gluten free pretzel stix (LOVE anything crunchy!), and a recipe she received from her new Louisiana neighbors with an awesome spice mix to use with it! I have yet to try it but look forward to making this amazing recipe- who wouldn’t want to use a spice mix called ‘Slap Yo Mama’?  Thank you so much, Rachel, I loved EVERYTHING in the box!

SUCH amazing goods!!

What is a Foodie Pen Pal you ask?  Why, the greatest club for foodies ever!!   Want to be a foodie pen pal, too?  Check out Lindsay’s blog!

Well that should do it!  I have a few interesting posts lined up for this week, including coconut flour recipe, paleo diet musings, things I wonder about…and more!  So stay tuned :)   Have a fabulous night!  I’m off to catch up on Vampire Diaries :)

Question for you rockers: Ever get that rush after cleaning out and tossing junk? Anyone else have a shameless love for Star Wars?  Cheer-leader or soccer?

Rock on lovers!!
